What are GBL and GHB?

GBL (gammabutyrolactone) and GHB (gammahydroxybutrate) are two identical drugs with similar composition, which are harmful medications with comparative anaesthetic and sedative impacts.

GBL on entering the body after a short time converts to GHB. These drugs create a euphoric feeling and can lower inhibitions as well as cause lethargy.

In any case, any one of these drugs can end a life and they are especially devastating when taken with any form of alcohol or similar narcotic or depressant substances.

What do they look like?

When sold in form of medications they are often available as a colourless, odourless and oily fluid with a somewhat salty taste in little capsules or containers. A capful or teaspoon of the drug is the usual dosage, however, the potency of GHB is not stable thereby making it extremely hard for individuals to know the quantity they’re consuming, making overdose a high probability.

GHB has also been known to be sold in a powdery form referred to as iGHB though this form is quite rare to come by. Costs can differ according to location, but usually a plastic containing 30ml of GHB is sold for around £15.

Use

In the medical community, GHB is used in treating narcolepsy, whereas GBL is genuinely recognized as a paint stripper, rust remover, stain remover, superglue remover, and an alloy cleaner.

What are the impacts of GHB/GBL?

GBL and GHB create basically similar impacts: euphoric feelings, lower self-consciousness and lethargy. The drug’s impacts are felt after around 10 minutes to an hour of use and remain effective for about seven hours or more.

What are the dangers of GHB/GBL?

Ingesting GHB or potentially GBL carries certain dangers. Below are some of the effects it could have on you:

  • Both GBL and GHB can lead to unconsciousness, coma and ultimately death.
  • Even practiced users face the danger of death.
  • Since GBL and GHB can make an individual lose consciousness, they’ve been connected to drug-assisted rape cases.
  • When badly mixed, it can actually cause mouth burns.
  • GBL/GHB is especially harmful when combined with alcohol and ingested.

Can you become addicted to GHB and/or GBL?

Yes, constant use has currently been proven to cause addiction in a few individuals.

Extremely serious withdrawals with hallucination have been documented – particularly during spontaneous detoxification when individuals have found it hard to acquire GHB or GBL.

GHB and GBL and the law

Both GHB and GBL are categorised as Class C drugs – however GBL is accessible for genuine industrial use, but in the event that an individual supplies or possesses them with certainty or intent to ingest or use, they are breaking the law.

Possession of these drugs can get you jail term of about two years or a hefty fine.

Supplying to another person, even your companions, can have you imprisoned for up to 14 years with the possibility of a hefty fine.
